Journey description
Departure from Iquitos, urban island lost in the green Amazonian ocean. We embark in Nauta on a fast boat to Requena at the mouth of Rio Tapiche.
Sailing up the Rio Tapiche and Rio Blanco and arrival at Curinga, a former garrison of the Peruvian army to counter the raids of Matses tribes on colonial villages.
Beginning of the 4 days trek escorted by our Matses carriers. We walk through different kinds of forests, some swampy areas, others inter-river jungles. After crossing the Matses National Reserve, we finally enter the indigenous territory.
Arrival at the first village, Buenas Lomas, near where the evangelist mission settled back in the 1970s. Another day walking takes us to Puerto Alegre on the Rio Yaquerana at the border with Brasil.
Navigation down the Rio Yaquerana on dugout canoes to reach the villages close the mouth of the Rio Chobayacu (Santa Rosa, Estiron). Possible stop on the Brazilian Matses territory. We will have the chance to see a traditional longhouse (“maloca”) built by the Matsés to restore their identity and traditional culture.
Sail down to the villages on Rio Galvez and arrival at the garrison of Angamos where a plane takes us back to Iquitos.
